Glossary of website-related terms

"A" Record
The IP address of a webserver

Banner
The banner that's (usually) placed horizontally across the top of your website template, commonly incorporating your company name/branding/logo.

Bookmark
You can "bookmark" an area of a website page.  This means to create a link where visitors can click on and automatically get to the "bookmarked" area.

Bulk Email
The process of email communication using a mailing list

Catalogue manager
The area within a website content management system where you can add product images and information (usually as part of a shopping cart).  Can be broken into different categories to make it easier to manage and to view on your website.

CMS
Content Management System - the system you use to make changes to your website.

Content
The text and images that your website consists of.

Domain name
The web-address people use to locate your website on the internet.

Domain registrar
The place where you purchase your domain name

Directory
A categorised system, commonly managed by humans, designed to help find information on the internet.

Ecommerce website
A website that uses a shopping cart to sell products online.

Email
There are several ways you can have email addresses that end in your domain name. 

File space
The size of your website (how much room it takes up on a server)

File format
For websites, images should be in an appropriate file format.  Jpeg is the best file format for photos.

Form field
The box you type information into on a form page.  eg. Name:

Forum page
A webpage where users can post content on a collection of related topics

Freight options
The varying ways of sending goods to customers following an online purchase:
e.g.: "Local Same Day", "National Next Day" and "Other countries".

FTP
File Transfer Protocol. The language used for transferring files between computers across the world wide web.

HTML
Hypertext Markup Language - the language used in the creation of webpages - using a template-based system to build a website means you don't need to know HTML in order to build your website.

Keywords/Key phrases
The words that searchers might use when they are trying to find a business 'like yours' through a search engine.

Links
Active text or images that by clicking on you will move to a different page or place online.

Member database
A list of members (customers) who are available for regular contact by you through email and who you have the option to allow special access to members-only areas of your website.

Menu comments area
The area beneath your menu, where you can enter further text or images

Metatags
Provide information about a given webpage, most helpful to search engines.  Meta title located in the top blue browser bar.

Menu
The list of buttons (eg. home, about us, contact) used to navigate through your website

Nameserver
Computer server software that resolves domain names to IP addresses.  Makes it possible to access your website using an easier-to-remember domain "name" rather than a whole series of numbers (IP address).  If you are changing from one webhost to another, you may need to update your nameservers.

Navigation
How you move between pages within a website - eg. menu buttons and links

Opt in/Opt out
A link on any mailing list communication where customers(members) can choose to be a subscriber to the service or not.

Payment gateway
A 3rd party financial service provider that collects money generated from online sales from the customer's credit card and deposits the money into your bank account.

Radio button
The button on a form that you can select from one option or another eg: yes or no. no

Registration page
Where visitors to your website can enter their email address to 'sign-up' for newsletters or password protected pages.

Returns policy
Every website with a shopping cart should include a refund/returns policy page that details your terms and conditions with regard to returning/refunding products.

SEO
Search Engine Optimisation - the process of improving your search ranking on search engines.

Search Engine
A system designed to help find information on the internet eg. Google, Yahoo

Shopping Cart
The online tool within your website where you can list products available for sale - a series of dynamic pages that allow users to browse, add items to cart then purchase.

Spam
Junk email.  Unsolicited, uninvited emails endeavoring to sell. 

Traffic
The amount of visitors to your website

Web hosting
The fee you pay to rent space on high speed servers so your website is available to the general public even when your computer is switched off.

Website wizards
The "do it yourself" tools that let you add content to your website without using html.

Web statistics
An application that informs about the number of visitors to your website, where they are from, how they are locating you etc.

Website template
The consistent framework for a collection of webpages together known as a website.

URL
Uniform Resource Locator...can be thought of as the "address" of a webpage
