Domain Name Cost Rise July 2025
On 1st July 2025, the NZ domain registry will increase the wholesale price of domains, and all registries will have to increase domain name prices. This means whichever register your domain is with will also be affected by the same wholesale increase.
The price of domains at Website World will rise from $33+gst to $39+gst (for new domains of most suffixes, and renewal of domains on live websites). The price of domain renewals for free parked domains will rise from $47+gst to $54+gst (includes DNS service)
We encourage you to renew your domain names before 1st July to take advantage of the current lower costs. Login to the CMS, and renew your domains under the Domain left hand menu option. Then select the Renew Domain button next to each of your listed domain names.
This price rise is led by an increase in wholesale domain prices by the .nz Registry, and all registries will have to increase domain name prices. This means that whichever host your domain is with will also be affected the same by the wholesale increase.
You should renew your domains before 1st July 2025 to enjoy the existing lower prices even if your domain is not close to expiring. On the NZ registry, you can renew at any time, and for up to a maximum of 10 years from now. So if there are 2 years left until your domain renewal, you can renew for 8 years today. There is nothing lost by renewing early, but you can save quite a lot of money.
The NZ domain registry has said they are increasing domain name costs due to:
- Sustained and significant increase of the costs over the last five years associated with our product infrastructure, resourcing and general operational expenses that can no longer be absorbed.
- Work associated with the .nz Rules programme and environmental changes that will impose additional future costs related to critical infrastructure compliance, data protection and privacy compliance, and sustainability.
- The temporary COVID-related growth trends have subsided, and there has been a return to low or no growth in the .nz register, similar to that seen in 2019.
Please ensure you do not use online banking to pay for domains on the last day, as the price charged will be on the date the renewal is actioned, not on the date of payment.
