How to Thank Your Customers for Their Purchases

It is much easier to keep a customer than to attract new ones, making it vital that we spend time developing positive relationships with our customers. This builds loyalty, encourages word of mouth promotion, increases repeat purchases and shows customers you truly appreciate them.

A key way to do so is by letting your customers know you appreciate their purchases, and we've got a list of ideas you may wish to try out.

5 Ways of Showing Customer Appreciation

There are several things you can do which let your customers know you appreciate their loyalty and purchases:

  1. Post purchases discounts - offering a discount on their next purchase is a great incentive to help a customer think favorably of your business and purchase from it again.
  2. Hand written messages - showing the personal touch by writing a short note to be enclosed with their purchase is a great way of demonstrating you appreciate the customer's decision to purchase from your business.
  3. Free gifts or samples - enclosing free gifts or samples along with a customer's order gives them the opportunity to try different products from you and receive something they weren't expecting. It's like having a bonus gift that makes them feel favorably to your business.
  4. Package inserts - a package insert is a pre-printed leaflet which gives the customer further information about your business and products, requests for reviews and often a discount code.
  5. Personal emails - time consuming, but sending a personal thank you email to the customer asking if they are satisfied and if there is anything further you can help with, will be seen favourably. Even though a response is unlikely, your email is something the customer will remember.

What to Include in a Customer Thank You Note

If words are failing you, we've put together a list of things to include in your thank you note, along with a few pointers to get you started:

  • make sure you begin the note with their name and end with yours
  • decide on which specific customer type you are sending thank you notes to - new, repeat or high value customers? On their birthdays? Loyalty members?
