Google Chrome Security Warnings

This month Google Chrome is rolling out new updates that will identify traditionally hosted websites as insecure. They are not broken from a 2016 perspective, but they are not SSL secure. Google wants all websites to be SSL Secure. 

We have previously rolled out this update automatically for all our premium hosting customers to ensure they were given priority support in time for Googles update.

We will now be extending this SSL offer to all our standard hosting customers, on the $25 per month plan or $250 month plan and above. If you are currently a premium hosting customer, please don't downgrade yet, as we won't be implementing the very important https redirection for another month or so. 

Steps for converting your standard website into a SSL site: 

  • First check your SSL version website is alive. Simply change the http: part of your browser address to https: 
  • Your SSL version website should be available if your http website has been live for more than a few days. If not contact support. 
  • Check to see if your SSL version website has any warning messages. All if well if you see a green padlock. If you see a white circle with an exclamation mark, then there is more work to do. You may need to revise any old plugins that refer to other http websites... try changing them from http to https, and then all should be well. Contact support if you need help fixing up your website to be SSL ready. Support fees will apply for our teams time, as our standard templates and features would not experience these issues, so we would be supporting third party customization.  
  • If you see a green padlock, then all is well and you are ready to signal that your website is SSL preferred. Please login to the CMS, hover over SEO tab, then click "Contact Details", and change your primary URL from http to https version. This will be included in meta tags to tell Google which URL is the preferred URL. 
  • Once we implement our URL re-directions, then all users will see the SSL version no matter which URL they start with. We have thousands of customers to process, so we cannot guarantee a specific date for this. If you want to jump the queue, please change to a premium hosting plan.  

Wordpress / PHP Hosting Plans Now Available

We can now host PHP and Wordpress or Joomla websites on our new and improved PHP web servers. The hosting fees are the same as websites built and hosted on our CMS powered platform. All PHP websites get free SSL certificate and https web hosting. Unlike cheap hosting providers, our PHP plans offer a premium web hosting service, with low contention for CPU or IO bandwidth.

New Developer / Support Person: Laken

Please welcome Laken who will be joining our team as a developer and support person with a technical focus. In future months we will promote how Laken's programming skills can be used to extend areas of our back end systems, and do custom development requests. 

System Updates

Product Returns

We are currently beta testing a new product returns feature in the "View Order" screen within the CMS. This will allow you to record returned or exchanged goods against an order, and have your inventory automatically adjusted. We welcome your feedback on this long requested feature. 

You can now also enter negative stock in the POS system, which will be treated as a return... however, this method may not feed into Xero or other API partners correctly, as they are not setup to receive negative stock. 

.nz Reservations Expiring

About 2 years ago, many .nz registrants reserved the shorter version of their domain name. eg If you have a .co.nz web address, you might have reserved the shorter .nz version of the domain, however, you might not have registered it. That reservation process was free, and it had a 2 year limit on it. Now that time is nearing to an end, you need to register the shorter version of your domain, or lose the exclusive right to it. 

The process to register the shorter version of your domain is easy. 

  1. Login to the CMS
  2. Select your longer .co.nz domain
  3. Click (Registry) button
  4. Check for availability of the shorter version...
  5. Register / Transfer this domain

 If those options are not available to you, it's possible that you have already attempted the transfer/registration of your shorter domain. Check the domains list, and if it's there, attempt to complete transfer/registration. 

TIP: Registration of a reserved domain is actually treated by all domain registry companies as a "TRANSFER" of the domain, using the same UDAI as the longer version of the domain.

Clearing your Browser Cache and Publishing

Caching speeds up your computer, but it also causes confusion when viewing changes to your website.  Every web master needs to become familiar with this concept. Almost a third of all our support tickets relate to mis understandings about caching. We can't change the nature of the internet, we only educate.

  • Pressing publish button is neccesary even before you go live. Pressing the publish button allows you to navigate your trial website. When you navigate your trial website, you are actually navigating the published pages in many cases. Only the first page to preview in preview mode usually shows your recent changes. 
  • Your web browser is not aware that you are currently editing your website. The web browser does not undersstand any connection between our website builder CMS, and your website with a completely different URL. You typically need to press REFRESH on your browser to see recent updates. Or you may even need to clear your browser cache.
