Welcome to our new programmer

Welcome to our new staff member Thi Senaratne. Thi (pronouced tee) specialises in programming and website development. He will be backing up Reuben in investigating domain name and email issues, as well as programming the new features for our website builder software. Thi takes our total team up to 8 people including contractors.

What is a Favicon?

Do you use a browser with tabs? (its pretty standard nowadays).  Note the small picture on each tab that helps represent each site, they may also appear on the address bar of the site you are currently viewing - those are "favicons" - while they are small, they are another opportunity for branding and add to your overall image.

Most browsers remember the favicon and associate it with your bookmark - hence they will help jog peoples memories of your site when they are browsing through their bookmarks.  Some are quite recognisable and help you to find that tab or bookmark you are after, while the blank ones... well they are just that, blank.  What about your site?  Does it have one?

Well here's how to fix that... first you need to create a favicon?  You can manually create a 32x32 bitmap then save it with the extension ".ico" what might be a lot easier though, grab you company logo or emblem - go to http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/ which produces a miniaturized version of your branding.... after creating a favicon your are happy with, navigate Design Settings > Icon for Browser Bar and then upload and apply your new icon.  Publish and note your new functioning favicon.

Calendars or Event List?

For a long time we have just offered a dynamic event list for presenting your events. Our new programmer Thi has been busy at work developing a new "events calendar". The calendar is presented in a calendar format, with up to a year long view so that people can easily see the timing of events. So if you have previously been using our page editor calendar, linking all your events manually, then you may like to consider the new dynamic calendar. It is easy to change your existing events page to a calendar page, by clicking on the blue page button, then changing the page layout to "Events Calendar". You can always change it back to an ordinary "Events" page again, much the same way.

Xero Accounting Integration

If you run a shopping cart and have trouble generating your GST returns, you can now interface your shopping cart directly to Xero online accounting system, saving you hours of data entry. If you currently have a live or trial Xero login, please contact us and Reuben will talk you through the process to complete the integration. Basically you need to obtain a special "key" from within Xero, that you then copy and paste into the tax setup area of your web widgets shopping cart. After that, your orders will automatically be posted to your Xero account, and waiting for you in the xero "drafts" folder.

Websites of the Month

Here's a small selection of our customers newer DIY websites. Some of those we think have done a great job of designing and creating using the Web Widgets tools.
